Understanding Skin Cancer

What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, affecting millions of people worldwide each year. It occurs when skin cells grow uncontrollably due to DNA damage, often caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. Early detection and treatment are crucial in preventing the spread and complications of skin cancer.

Types of Skin Cancer

There are three main types of skin cancer:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common and least aggressive type. It often appears as a flesh-colored or pearl-like bump and can be treated effectively if caught early.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): The second most common type, which may look like a red, scaly patch or a sore that doesn't heal. Early treatment is essential to prevent spread.
  • Melanoma: The most dangerous form of skin cancer, known for its ability to spread rapidly to other parts of the body. Melanomas often look like irregular moles and require prompt treatment for the best outcomes.

Why Early Treatment is Essential

  • Higher Cure Rates:  Early detection and treatment of skin cancer significantly increase the chances of a full recovery. MOHS surgery, in particular, offers cure rates of up to 99% for certain types of skin cancer.
  • Preventing Spread:  Untreated skin cancer can invade deeper tissues and spread to other parts of the body, making it more difficult to treat and potentially life-threatening.
  • Minimizing Damage:  Early treatment helps minimize the damage to surrounding healthy tissue, reducing the risk of significant scarring and disfigurement.
  • Cost-Effective:  Treating skin cancer in its early stages is generally less complex and less expensive than managing advanced stages of the disease.
